Parental Pondering

Posted on Mar 11, 2005 at 1:22 PM in Livia

Is it wrong to leave your baby in her very full and very stinky diaper while she’s happily and independently playing on the floor and you’re enjoying surfing the web and reading your email?

(Note: After this picture was taken, this “the playgym’s eating my baby” picture, I realized the little gym was just too little for my big baby.)

It is not wrong and I have done it myself, why mess up their happy world with a torturous diaper change. I am enjoying your site and the pictures of your kids. I was also going to say that the entry that you made about mothers not get social security…kudos!! It made me think of something that I never thought about before. Thank you for sharing.

Welcome, Jami. Please note that I made a mistake about Social Security… Mothers can receive a portion of SS based on their husband’s earnings, though they don’t continue to “earn” their own when not involved in the capital-earning workforce. It’s interesting, though, to look at how different countries value or devalue childrearing by various practices (maternity leave, working overtime, retirement, etc).

I say it’s fine, as long as the baby is happy and the wait is fairly brief. I know several moms who try to limit diaper changes to 3-4 per day starting at about 3 months to save money. I’m willing to assert that wrong to leave your child sitting in excrement to save a buck or two a week.

I was actually kidding with my question, but the humor obviously didn’t translate onto the web. I should’ve put one of these behind the first sentence ; ).

My mother the Public Health Nurse would kill me if I left Livia in a poopy diaper for too long. As it is she pretty much changes Pookie’s diaper every time she walks in the door. (By the way, thanks, Mom!)

I was suring a few weeks ago and saw that MoBapt become a real, grown up University. No more college. When did this happen?
Wow. I have some great MoBapt memories.

    – the cheerleaders
    – a guy I know who went there, didn’t own any shirt that wasn’t a Xian tshirt
    – the big final project was to make a Matthew notebook with about twelve divisions (history, outline, key figures, theology, etc), but it was perfectly acceptable to fill it with photocopies and internet artiicles. The goal was to have a BIG notebook.
    – Spirit Wing. No one could believe it when I made fun of them.
    – I knew a group of guys who thought it was of the essence to make evangelistic movies

I’d love to hear some of yours.
I wonder how Spirit Wing is doing?

Doug, MoBap became a university right after I graduated (2001). I’m impressed at your memories because I can’t remember much — I think I blocked most of it out! I remember despising mandatory chapels and being incredibly grateful when I didn’t have to go any longer. I remember reviewing Dave Matthew’s Band’s “Two Step” for a music class in hopes of being somewhat rebellious against their Baptist sensibilities. I remember an education classmate, one who taught Sunday School and led youth group at her church, telling me with no shame at all how she handed in a paper copied from the internet. Such fond memories, huh? Oddly enough I met up with two PCA girls at MoBap — and they’re my best friends from St. Louis. Heh.

I love Ruth and Cal’s blogs! I can’t believe how big they’ve gotten… Geez, you and Julie must be getting old! ; )
