CNN is giving away a home theater system if you are the lucky guesser who fills out the Oscar ballot correctly. I suppose film fanatics might have educated guesses about the award winners, but I’d have to be the luckiest guesser alive to win this thing. I did see all five best picture nominees — and yet, who’s to say my tastes align with those of the academy? Correct ballot or no, the best part about next Sunday night is Who is there, What they’re wearing, and What they say in their speeches. T-minus seven days and counting…

    yay, i’m so excited!
i’m not sure i’ll have time to see all of the best picture noms before next week. i still haven’t seen master and commander and mystic river.
oh well, i might just not be able to see them all, and therefore make what some might see as an uneducated ballot vote.

  2. sarah Feb 22, 2004 7:22 PM

i do agree, for some reason i also really like to look at all of the clothing that people wear to the oscars. ah, fun in the fashion world.

  3. Renae Feb 22, 2004 8:49 PM

yippee, I love a good Oscar ballot. RT, are your selections based on who you think will actually win or who you want to win?

  4. rt Feb 22, 2004 9:11 PM

it’s who i think will win. of course, with regards to ROTK i’m totally optimistic (but they are also so deserving!). ken wantanabe is my wild card pick – as adrien brody was last year. brody won, but wantanabe stands a good chance of losing to tim robbins.

  5. dena Feb 23, 2004 12:03 AM

For the Grace-ers out there, in case you haven’t heard about it already… come watch the oscars at Zion sunday night!! It will be so fun- hi-def screen and all that. It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to… :)

and we will be filling out our own ballots- with prizes!

  6. bethany Feb 23, 2004 8:16 AM

dena, can i come? the thing at my house has kind of fallen through…and even if it hasn’t, yours sounds like more fun. :)

  7. Karen Feb 23, 2004 10:18 AM

i’m secretly hoping that the alleged oscar party at the koenig’s house will fall through because, i think, all of us zioners involved would rather come to the zion party.

  8. dena Feb 23, 2004 10:32 AM

Of course you can come! This is really the church’s party- I’m merely the organizer. And the more the merrier!

  9. dena Feb 23, 2004 10:34 AM

    ah, karen… such loyalty :)

  10. Jason Feb 23, 2004 2:01 PM

Some good picks there (Ken Watanabe for Best Supporting Actor – yes!), but I really, really, really hope “The Twilight Samurai” wins Best Foreign Film. If it does, than those of you at the Zion party will probably see me at my absolute geek-iest.

  11. Jason Feb 23, 2004 2:05 PM

I do, however, hope you’re wrong about Sean Penn. If he wins the Oscar, it’s only because the judges felt obligated to give it to him because he practically begged for it with his performance in “Mystic River”. If they’re going to award a comedic performance, why not just give it to Depp?

    (My, I’m feeling snarky today…)

  12. charity Feb 23, 2004 2:47 PM

i agree with you in general. have to pull for bill murray for best actor, though wouldn’t be surprised if sean penn got it. and would love it if depp took everyone by surprise. best adaptation i have to pull for lotr. best animation i would say triplets of belleville (i got bored with “nemo” and turned if off. :/). best art direction: girl with a pearl earing. some of the others i haven’t seen, like the documentaries and short films. bummer. but can’t wait till sunday!

  13. sarah Feb 23, 2004 3:34 PM

yes, just as bethany and karen said, i have secretly been hoping that the party planned for our house falls through here soon, so that i can plan to go to zion for the oscars, because i love you all so much!

and guess what…i just saw girl with a pearl earring last night (as many of you know, having been there also), and today i discovered that i’ll be going to it again on friday for school (arts and humanities program). i enjoyed it very much though, it was a treat to the eye, so beautiful.

  14. bethany Feb 23, 2004 5:29 PM

“If they’re going to award a comedic performance, why not just give it to Depp?”

    Hiyoh!

  15. rt Feb 23, 2004 5:34 PM

jason, i picked “zelary” because it rhymes with celery! like my voting skills? (“uh, kerry rhymes with berry… i like berries. kerry for president!”) ; )

as to the best actor category, i believe penn has the best chance of winning and i could really use that home theater system, thus my vote. i like johnny depp but wasn’t wowed by “pirates.”

ct, ROTK probably does deserve best screenplay adaptation. i just felt like i couldn’t put it down for everything and felt like “mystic” would pull in a few wins. again, my voting skills… well, there’s really no skill involved — an opinion here and there, a few guesses, and some silly word games about sums up my oscar ballot.

  16. Jason Feb 23, 2004 7:38 PM

Ehhh… sorry if I came off like a film snob. I mean, I am one, but I try not to let it get the best of me. :)

  17. dena Feb 23, 2004 11:28 PM

Well, you all are going to have a very good chance to win the “prizes” at the party! I think I am probably not eligible… organizer and all that. sigh.

My vote is with Charity on the adapted screenplay- and hopefully I will see “triplets” before sunday to make that decision. should be a fun night- I’m excited to share it with you all :)

  18. bethany Feb 24, 2004 8:31 AM

dena, i think you should still be able to win. it’s not like organizing the party gives you any special insight into who’s going to win.

  19. sarah Feb 24, 2004 9:28 AM

    or does it?

    hmmmm…. *strokes imaginary beard*

  20. rt Feb 25, 2004 9:38 AM

there’s no reason why you shouldn’t win the prize, dena… but it might just be best to give it away since you are the host for the evening.

  21. sarah Feb 25, 2004 1:12 PM

well, it turns out that some of us will have to stick to our previous oscar party plans (even though we’d rather be at zion). it turns out that the people planning the party at our house are, in fact, still going to come to our house. so we’re stuck…
it’s okay, we decided that it is after all, only the oscars, which come every year and aren’t as huge of a deal in the grand scheme of things as we make it out to be….blah blah blah…jk.

  22. sarah Feb 25, 2004 1:13 PM

we will miss you all though….have fun!

  23. bethany Feb 25, 2004 1:53 PM

rebecca, i think you’re just scared that dena’s picks will beat yours! ;)

i think i’m still planning on coming to zion, despite whatever crazy goings on are at my house.

  24. karen Feb 25, 2004 4:34 PM

all i know is that the 7 layer dip will be at the koenigs house. (that was my sorry attempt to make it seem like i didn’t want to come to the zion party anymore)

  25. rebecca Feb 25, 2004 5:07 PM

i don’t know where charity and i will end up for the viewing of the grand event… we have to drive a friend to the omaha airport at the start of it all, so we’ll see what happens.

mmm… seven layer dip. (i think i’ll end up at the koenigs!)

  26. lindsay Feb 25, 2004 9:13 PM

    boo.
i want to go to zion, too.

but, you see, i have to go to the party that is being thrown by this boy who loves karen (i’m so dead for saying this) and he’s throwing it at the koenig’s house, but he never talks to me or the koenig girls about it. he just talks to karen (you know why).
so, you see, even though i know i’ll have fun at the koenigtheatre, i’m just in a sour mood right now.
    and i need coffee.

  27. sarah Feb 25, 2004 10:47 PM

i have had two cups of coffee tonight, so i’m going strong right about now.

  28. rt Feb 25, 2004 10:57 PM

oh, dd, you’re not dead for saying that boy loves karen! most boys do love her… and we can’t fault them for that, can we?

what i can’t figure out is why he’s having the party at the koenig’s (if he loves karen and doesn’t even talk to the koenigs) and why all of you must attend. this is my own delirious-from-hours-of-the-bachelorette and very tired brain talking out loud. don’t mind me… no coffee here.

  29. dena Feb 25, 2004 10:58 PM

alas, i am truly saddened by the sudden unavailability of several of you- and yet, the show must go on, as it were… :)

  30. dena Feb 25, 2004 10:59 PM

i hope you and charity stop by, rebecca! it just won’t seem the same without you!

  31. rt Feb 25, 2004 11:02 PM

the show must go on… the show must go on!
    inside my heart is breaking
    my makeup may be flaking…

  32. dena Feb 25, 2004 11:06 PM

ah, one of my favorites… and the best soundtrack to get stuck in your head!! thanks, rebecca!

  33. rt Feb 25, 2004 11:15 PM

hey girlfriend — i love love love moulin. by the way, methinks youth group went quite well tonight. praise the Lord for the newcomers — we had quite a large group stuffed in that small, stinky space, eh?

  34. lindsay Feb 26, 2004 9:39 AM

i wasn’t playing youth-group hooky (sp?) by the way–i had to take a food-handler’s class. yuck. the most memorable moment of the night was when the teacher started talking about the difference between diarrhea and a ‘loose stool.’

“Now, you all might be sitting there thinking about a toilet bowl that’s loose (nervous laugh) when I say ‘loose stool.’ But (clears throat) that’s not what we’re talking about here.”

  35. Karen Feb 26, 2004 10:39 AM

This alleged “boy in love with me” talk is awkward. Lindsay, you don’t get any dip.

  36. sarah Feb 26, 2004 1:16 PM

well, to answer your question a while back, rebecca, the boy wanted to do it at our house, i’m guessing because of the theatre room. (he only loves us for our house!) they just wanted to watch it on the big screen i suppose, and we didn’t have any plans at the time, so we said yes.
he’s probably willing to talk to us, but just hasn’t made the effort that we’d expect from the person planning a big event. oh well, …we’ll definitely have fun, but not as much fun as we’d be having at zion.

but i think bethany is still planning on going to the zion party, but i’m not sure. all i know is that karen, lindsay, and i won’t be coming to zion *sob*, but i think we’ll survive. i’ve decided that everyone will have fun at their parties, no matter where those parties are held, as it were…

  37. sarah Feb 26, 2004 1:22 PM

hehe,…no dip for lindsay. (i’ll just have to make up for it by eating lindsay’s share.

yes, i’m excited that there was someone new at youth group! it went really well last night: the music, the talk, the games. it seemed like the people were listening to jared’s talk and actually processing it, so that was very good, i thought. and it’s exciting to have people in the youth group participating in providing the music, rather than just the leaders. (not that the leaders aren’t fantastic on their own) :-).

  38. lindsay Feb 26, 2004 2:43 PM

    fine, karen.
if i don’t get any dip, then you don’t get any of, of, um, the really good food that i’m bringing.
    (:

p.s. why is it that we’re never surprised when some boy is in love with karen, but she is always surprised? maybe that’s what is so great about her.

  39. karen Feb 26, 2004 2:49 PM

I’ll have you know I’m making multiple kinds of dip…and you will be denied every one of them.

  40. sarah Feb 26, 2004 3:41 PM

(directed toward lindsay in a nelson from the simpsons voice) Haha! No dip for you!

  41. taylor Feb 26, 2004 7:58 PM

here I come to barge in and give my two cents uninvited…

ROTK should and will win Best Pic and Best Director… However, Master and Commander was EXTREMELY well done, and should not go unoticed. Sean Penn is weird, I haven’t seen Mystic River. Nonetheless, Johnny Depp should win.

Just saw The Passion last night… MIND-BLOWING. INCREDIBLE. AMAZING. I’m hoping to go again w/the church

  42. rt Feb 27, 2004 10:12 AM

hey taylor! your two cents are always welcome. : ) i think everyone wants depp to win because they LIKED the movie and he was quite funny. but i don’t agree that his keith richards/swashbuckling pirate act was amazing enough to win an oscar… of course, often oscars are given to reward the actor and his/her abilities with less importance being placed on the specific role that year. which is exactly why my money is on sean penn.

  43. bethany Feb 28, 2004 11:22 PM

i think johnny depp is one of the best actors of his generation and that he was the only great thing about an otherwise mediocre movie in PotC, but i don’t know that it deserves an oscar. i think only bill murray truly deserves it of the guys nominated. i’m just really, really hoping it doesn’t go to sean “give me a freakin’ oscar already” penn, at least not for mystic river. he can win someday for something else, something he doesn’t overact so desperately in.

  44. taylor Feb 29, 2004 3:22 PM

PotC admittedly, wasn’t the best movie ever made. The acting was good, the storyline could have been better… However, what were we expecting to come from a film based on a theme park ride??? :-)

Johnny Depp certainly shouldn’t recieve an Oscar just for his role in Pirates, however, it appears that Penn and Murray have split the vote, and Depp may end up w/it anyways!

  45. rt Feb 29, 2004 4:31 PM

everyone says that penn’s performance was just a demand for the oscar, but i don’t get that at all. i think he fit the mystic river role perfectly… and i also think he’s one of the best choices for the best actor category. perhaps his very dramatic role seems like a desperate oscar plea in contrast to murray’s very subtle, very nuanced perfomance in lost. but why should an underplayed role be more deserving than a dramatic one?

  46. bethany Feb 29, 2004 5:21 PM

I don’t think it’s a matter of contrast. I have nothing against dramatic, big roles when they’re done well and there is still some restraint shown. I just felt like Penn’s performance was the worst of the whole cast in that movie, totally over the top. I actually laughed aloud at the “Is that my daughter in there?!?” scene, which you would think would be a disturbing/emotional scene, but Sean Penn’s acting just pushed it into the realm of the ridiculous. Part of that may be due to the direction as well.

It just seems like too often people (the academy, for the purposes of this conversation) only recognize acting if it’s over and shoved in their face. “See? It’s Sean Penn. He’s screaming and weeping. That means he’s ACTing.” It seems infinitely easier to me to glare and yell and curse and get across that you’re angsty and sad than it does to restrain your performance and convey much with little (a la Murray, for example).

But that’s just my opinion. ;)
