I’ve been on the countdown to 30 since December 7, 2006, the day after I turned 29. On the sixth of every month I have this eerie sensation: Goodbye, twenties. I’m going to be 30 soon. Don’t bother telling me how ridiculous I’m being because I’m fully aware of the silliness. And for the record, I have no problem with my friends, my husband!, and others turning 30+. It’s fine if y’all need to go ahead and grow up, but I’m not so sure I’m ready to head into my thirties. I’m going to be thirty-something. Like the TV show. Hmm.
Here’s where I want your opinion, dear friends, fellow bloggers and previously anonymous readers. What should 30 year olds not do that 29 year olds can? Is there an age where people should dress and “act their age”? What age is that? The real question I want answers to is, when should men and women stop shopping in the young and hip juniors department at Target? Bring on the widely varied responses. The more the merrier. And heck, we all have opinions on this stuff, so opine away.
My talented friend (and stylist) Carrie turned my hair a lovely deep shade of red yesterday. I felt like this was something to be done before turning 30. Why? No clue, but I like the way it turned out!

Well, I guess I only have one thought related to clothing… you know those cute “baby doll” empire-waist peasanty shirts? I’ve been avoiding buying them because I’m afraid someone will ask me when I’m due. Now, granted, I’m 37 and not quite as fit and trim in the middle as I could be, but I think these shirts look better on those thin-ish 20-somethings.
I bought one recently anyway. I make sure to wear it with slim jeans rather than tapered “mom” jeans. I don’t know if that helps me look “not expecting, thankyouverymuch,” but it’s a comfy shirt!

awesome! i always thought you’d be a cool redhead…
Good question about the juniors section. I find the juniors section pretty scary in most department stores: too tight, too short, and too low — for probably any age. I like Target juniors for t-shirts and tanktops and that’s about it. My closet has morphed into mostly Eddie Bauer, Banana Republic, and Land’s End… And yeah, I think at the age of the 30, the baby doll shirts should go (and dresses too). :) I went through my closet a couple of weeks ago and finally gave them away after them sitting in there for two summers. I liked the idea of them, but dang if I they didn’t make me look big hipped!
And in case you were wondering, turning 30 DOESN’T allow you to wear sweats, jumpers, or those crinkly jogging suits in public! :)

Okay, maybe i better get with it b/c I’ll turn 30 in one year and I just bought my first, cute baby-doll shirt only 2 months ago!! Am I in denial? I thought I was being all hip and in my defense, the shirt was in the women’s section, not the junior’s. (It’s a rare day that I can get my “mature” body into any junior’s clothes, anyway!) I love the shirt, but my hubby, who so lovingly does most of the laundry, does refer to it as, “the shirt that makes you look pregnant.” Hmmm… Am I totally out of touch?
As for you, my dear Rebecca, well it’s not like you’re wearing trampy mini-skirts or teensy little spaghetti-strap shirts NOW, so I don’t think you need to worry about making too many changes as you enter a new decade of life. Just be you. :)

You’ll discover you can no longer stay up past midnight (for any reason whatsoever) without paying for it dearly in the morning.

bah! 30 is over rated. dont let it get you down. i once heard a good saying that i try to live by. apparently, john barrymore said it:
“a man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams”

I know I’m probably a lone reed, but I say continue shopping in the junior’s dept at Target as long as you want. I don’t just say “junior’s dept” because that dept at most stores I’ve stopped shopping myself, and I’m only 23. But Target is different. I think baby-doll tops (or “empire-waisted” if you don’t want to sound like you’re 18) are fine–just don’t get the shirt-dress ones with daisies all over and wear with leggings, eh? And by the time you’re really starting to doubt whether or not you can wear something, Livia will be old enough to say, “No Mom, you can’t wear THAT.”
P.S. LOVE the hair.

Thirty year olds can do whatever they want! The only difference I see with 30 is the confidence that comes from life and its experiences.
That’s the beauty of 30. It’s an age that says “I’ve experienced some things, but I’m still young and fabulous.” So, if you can wear them and look good, keep shopping in the juniors section (I for one have no plans to turn my closet into my mother’s and I’m 32).
Live life to the fullest and you’ll never have regrets, no matter what your age.

I have not been disappointed with your opinions! Fun reading for sure. : )

I occasionally shop in the juniors section, but not very seriously. I don’t have my twenty-something figure anymore and yes, if I wore an empire waist shirt people would ask me when I was due. No need to bring my self-esteem down any further, so I avoid those like the plague, even if I do think they’re unbearably cute.
I didn’t have a hard time turning 30 – it was 31 that got me. And 32 was even worse – one step closer to the mid-30’s stage.
Incredible how fast time goes.
