High Fat, High Sugar, What’s Not to Love?

Posted on Mar 31, 2010 at 8:02 PM in Family

I need a healthy alternative to ice cream. I’ve discovered that ice cream is our go-to treat on warm days after school and, to be honest, most any evening.

Any suggestions?

(not exclusively a dessert, of course)

I saw on a blog recently something about a frozen ice cream alternative. I’ll have to do a little poking around and get back to ya…

Okay, it’s from Sarah/In the Midst Of It (link on my blogroll): “This is a raspberry/banana “smoothie” I made after hearing from some friends that it can stand in for ice cream in a pinch. I gave up sugar back in December (another story for another day?), and the thought of an ice cream-less existence makes me sad. This makes a pretty good substitute! Throw two frozen bananas, a package of frozen raspberries, half a non-frozen banana, and enough soy milk that it’ll all blend, and puree until you have a thick mix. Eat with a spoon, and congratulate yourself.”

I was going to say something similar to Moriah. We make smoothie popsicles with whatever fruit we have around, some yogurt (usually plain), then freeze in a popsicle mold. Not quite the same as ice cream but it is cold and doesn’t have all the sugar in it.

Sorbet (not sherbet) – still has sugar, but less fat. I’m partial to Haagen Dazs, but it is a bit pricey.

mash a few bananas and put them in a ziplock to keep in your freezer.. It’s almost like ice cream! Also, if you have an ice cream maker you can make your own natural low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt!

Smoothies: Sam’s has this huge bag of mango, pineapple, strawberries, and peaches. I blend it with nonfat yogurt and orange juice. It hits the spot.

We are on a big smoothie kick here. If you buy big bags of frozen fruit, you can switch up the flavors and it has a good frozen treat texture. I use nonfat vanilla yogurt and some milk as a base and then add whatever fruit we’re interested in. Peaches, strawberries, banana, blueberries are all big hits.

    Sugar free pudding.

Or sugar free cool whip mixed with jam or fruit, and then frozen!

Awesome suggestions, gang. Though, I’ll admit, I felt like a big fattie reading through all these healthy ideas. I sure do like my ice cream… I just need to like it a less less often. : p

When my blender wasn’t in storage, green smoothies were my go-to instead of ice cream. I can’t do yogurt (migraine inducer) but green smoothies are awesome (green because of the spinach that you never taste).
