Reading Lists: February-June

Posted on Jul 8, 2008 at 9:42 PM in Book Reviews

I just deleted the paragraph that preceded my book lists. Ugh. Don’t you hate it when you have to re-think, re-type, re-edit the same exact post?

I started out 2008 with the goal of reading three books per month, then sharing my reading list with the blogging world. (Though now I’m questioning the sanity of such a decision, particularly after reading McMurtry’s latest novel which was overtly sexual and not worthy of recommendation. Oh for the days of Lonesome Dove, one of my favorite books of all time.) The last time I posted was also the first time I posted: back on February 1st.

In the interest of following through on this project, here’s what I’ve been reading for the last few months. I’m including my GoodReads ratings here (5 is the highest score attainable) in lieu of writing summaries for books I read some time ago.

February
Atonement by Ian McEwen (4)
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (3)
A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin (3)

March
Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka (5)
A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin (3)
A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin (2)

April
The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan (4)
The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory (3)

May
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (4)

June
When the Light Goes by Larry McMurtry (1)
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (3)
New Moon by Stephenie Meyer (2)

have you seen Atonement the movie yet? Stefan and I watched it this week and I thought it was amazing.

You are my hero, Bec!! It’s been a looooong time since I’ve read a novel and I commend you for making time to read. Well, I do read, but it’s for my CCE requirements. Still good reads, but definitely not novels. :)

SM, I liked the movie, too. The screenplay is by far the closest adaptation to a novel that I’ve ever seen. I read the book after seeing the movie–and it made me appreciate the story even more. The book contains more details and nuances, and it is really good.

SB, when I’m typing this list I think of all the good lit that I’m not reading… all the great Christian non-fiction (that sits, lonely, on my bookshelf), classics, etc. I’m impressed that you’re pursuing a goal with your reading! For sure you know more about childbirth than I ever will. : )

George R. R. Martin weaves a great tale. I am in “Clash” right now.

Do you have a copy of “Raising your Spirited Child” or did you get it from the library? Last time I checked there, it was out. Or did I try to find it at Barnes & Noble?
My spirited child will be in college before I read it, at this rate.

Thanks for the recommendations. I didn’t know you liked Lonesome Dove – I’ve been determined to read it for a long time but just haven’t…the movie sure is terrific!
