Sea of Red

Livia attended her first Husker football game last week. I thought it was pretty cool and, of course, I thought my kid looked pretty cute. Check out Scowly Guy down the row. He didn’t seem to think my wiggly three year old was all that cute.

I can admit I’m a social football fan. Feed me nachos, a slice of pizza or a Fairbury hot dog and I can sit still… for the first half.

I really go to the games because I enjoy the time with my Dad, and the rest of the state of Nebraska. For you non-Nebraskans out there (poor you!), Memorial Stadium becomes the third largest city in the state on game days. We’re fiercely loyal to our college football team because, well, there’s nothing else to do in this state. Football is our thing.

As socially interested as I am in Husker games, I’ve recently been educated somewhat on the actual rules of the sport. Thank you, Friday Night Lights! So now, instead of wondering about what’s going on in the midst of all those players, I just think of Matt Saracen and Tim Riggins (ahem) and it’s all crystal clear. Or maybe not so much.

One thing I know is true: There is no place like Memoral Stadium on game day. The crowd, the noise, the excitement; I love it.

We’ve got a few Huskers fans in my family – grandparents and such. My aunt was even a Huskers cheerleader!

They all still bring out the red on game days, even living in CO.

nobody warned me of the red crazy fans in this state when I moved here….this is what I have learned:
Never go downtown before or after game day. One can go during the game, but might not find parking.
If you accidently wear a red shirt on game day people will assume your a fan….if you don’t wear red they may ask you why you don’t have your game gear on.
everything is planned around husker football…when in doubt check the calender because scheduling an event during husker craziness will certainly result in a flop.
an eighty year old later may indeed try to start up small talk on the topic of”husker football”
the fastest way to shut a nebraskan up is to tell them you have never been to a husker game, let alone know anything about football…
and of course…. there is nothing to do in nebraska except watch football so I choose the later: do nothing.
    :)

While I love Husker football and eagerly anticipate the new team come this fall, I cannot let this go by…

TEN GREAT THINGS TO DO IN NEBRASKA

    1) Platte River State Park and Two Rivers State Recreation Area. Not as glitzy or crowded as Mahoney and totally decent hiking trails.

    2) Omaha’s world-famous Henry Doorly Zoo. Don’t do it all at once; get a zoo pass and come multiple times to enjoy the zoo more.

    3) Another Omaha plug: the Omaha botanical gardens at Lauritzen Gardens are beautiful and expansive. Their patch of natural grassland is gorgeous mid-summer when it’s high.

    4) Sand Hills. Still haven’t seen’em, but they’re there for the lookin’! Rumor has it they have cranes a few times a year.

    5) Canoeing the Niobrara or any one of the dozen rivers in the state. I’m not going to create a camping entry as we have canoeing and a couple SRAs already, but there it is.

    6) See a musical or dance number at the Lied Center or Kimball Recital Hall in Lincoln or the Orpheum in Omaha. Between Pershing, Devaney, and the Qwest Center we have national acts coming through all the time, and the Mid-America Center and casinos are bringing shows into Council Bluffs.

    7) Three, count’em, THREE national forests in the northwester part of the state. Haven’t been, but would love to.

    8) Lincoln and Omaha have five main museums between them. Numerous other museums dot the state. The Sheldon Art Gallery on UNL campus has an excellent collection of modern art.

    9) Pioneer Village in Minden is touristy, sure, but I’m told it’s still very fun. I haven’t been. Want to.

    10) Chimney Rock. One of the state’s defining monuments. Keep driving west a bit and enjoy some of the beautiful plateaus further out.

Honorable Mention) The State Capitol in Lincoln is an amazing building. The murals and artwork inside are stunning. The tour is actually worth your time. If you haven’t been, you should go sometime.

Clearly some things are left out. Please add your own!

Speaking of Friday Night Lights, I just watched the entire second season yesterday. I wish all tv shows came in single day marathon format. I can’t get enough of this show, bring on season three, writers!
