I love movies. And because I love movies, I love it when Oscar nominations are released. Here they are. Who are you rooting for this year?

I have literally not seen a single film nominated in the major categories. Once you start getting down into things like sound mixing (Bourne Ultimatum) and best song (Once, Enchanted), I’ve seen a couple. But still. That is kind of pathetic. :) I think it’s a first for me.

Oh wow. Cate Blanchett is nominated in both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress – wow! Wonder if that is a first?

I haven’t seen any of those nominated for best picture, but I really want to see Atonement. I’m trying to read the book, but haven’t picked it up in awhile.

Hope everyone is feeling better in your household!

Have no clue on nominations, but I’d love some movie suggestions from you since you love movies! Bob and I only watch them every once in a while and when we do, we have NO clue what to pick. Can I inspire you to do a top ten favorites or something like that, post?

Juno!!!! But I think that may be one of the only movies on the list of nominees that I have seen. Sad.

    Melissa – Not a first…
Fay Bainter (Best Actress for White Banners (1938) and Best Supporting Actress for Jezebel (1938)*)
Teresa Wright (Best Actress for The Pride of the Yankees (1942) and Best Supporting Actress for Mrs. Miniver (1942)*)
Jessica Lange (Best Actress for Frances (1982) and Best Supporting Actress for Tootsie (1982)*)
Sigourney Weaver (Best Actress for Gorillas in the Mist (1987) and Best Supporting Actress for Working Girl (1987))
Holly Hunter (Best Actress for The Piano (1993)* and Best Supporting Actress for The Firm (1993))
Emma Thompson (Best Actress for The Remains of the Day (1993) and Best Supporting Actress for In the Name of the Father (1993))
Julianne Moore (Best Actress for Far From Heaven (2002) and Best Supporting Actress for The Hours (2002))

No one’s ever won both in the same year, though (and my prediction is Blanchett won’t break that trend this year).

Of course, being married to a die-hard movie fan, I had the extensive nominations list right under my nose this morning, curtesy of my husband. (And I’ve become a pretty big fan, as well.) Bethany, your extensive Oscar history knowledge reminds of Dave!

We just saw, “The Diving Belll and the Butterfly” this past weekend and it was excellent, quite avant garde, just so prospective viewers are aware. And we also saw “No Country for Old Men” a few months back and it was an amazing film. Though, if you can’t stomach violence in movies, this movie is probably not for you! Javier Bardem was, by far, one of the best villain characters in any movie I’ve ever seen, even comparable to Hannibal Lecter…so glad he was nominated. And we have been dying to see “There will be Blood” ever since we first heard that PT Anderson was making a new movie…we have plans to make sure we see it before the Oscar ceremony.

So many great movies this year…but so little time! Or actually, it’s not that we don’t have the time, but rather, we lack the babysitting funds that would allow us to see so many movies in the theater! Oh, the perils of parenthood.

Michelle, I’m coming up with a few recommended movies for you!
