The One About Something Other than My Daughter

Just Read:
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, David Sedaris; The Time Traveler’s Wife, Audrey Neffenegger
Still Reading:
The Five Love Languages, Gary Chapman; And Then I Had Kids, Susan Alexander Yates; The Jane Austen Book Club, Karen Joy Fowler; Reading Lolita in Tehran, Azar Nafisi
Just Watched:
Meet the Fockers, Sideways
Still Watching:
Buffy and Angel

I am not a “multiple book reader” so it’s no surprise I haven’t finished the Jane Austen or Lolita books. The others I’m currently reading are for ongoing studies. The books in the just read category were purchased specifically for vacation and, though they engaged my interest, I did not love either one. Meet the Fockers gave me a laugh or two (I thought Barbara Streisand’s character was pretty funny) but overall was quite lame. Sideways received a far more favorable review from me. It was fairly depressing, painted with a broad stroke of realism (which gets gritty), but also ever so slightly redemptive. I enjoyed it.

And there you have it, another edition of “This Blog Isn’t Always about Livia.” Thank you for stopping by.

Wow, I am reading a lot of the same stuff you are right now. I just read the Time Traveler’s Wife and more or less liked it, even though it was confusing at first. I love David Sedaris so of course I loved Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. Did I tell you that I went to a book-signing of his recently? He read some of his stuff and it was so, so funny. But that’s just me. I am also trying to get through Reading Lolita in Tehran but I’m having a hard time catching the rythm of Nafizi’s writing. We should really go book shopping together sometime, Becca!

Haley, I’ll have you know I take seriously all your recommendations (and gifts from the reunion tour last fall). I am ashamed to admit I own no Flannery O’Connor, so I need to get cracking on that. I remember that you gave someone (Autumn, I think) Me Talk Pretty One Day — and I’m dying to read that one. I enjoyed Dress Your Family, just didn’t love it. I still laugh to myself thinking of some of the incidents Sedaris wrote about. How cool that you saw him in person! I bordered between fascination and irritation with The Time Traveler’s Wife (thanks for the inadvertent spelling correction on that one!) and would love to discuss it with you sometime. Coffee, say, Thursday night? ; ) Love you, friend!

What was your take on the book by Sedaris? His titles and book jackets look interesting, but I haven’t read any of them yet.

What’s going on? Where’s Livia? Where *was* she when you were reading these multiple books and watching these movies? What did she do that was adorable? Just because you are reading books and watching movies doesn’t make Livia disappear or something does it? We WANT LIVIA!!!

    Keith… ha!

Craig, I was fairly riveted by this Sedaris book, mostly because I couldn’t wait to read more accounts of his wacky family. I laughed out loud several times — and Jeremy should be glad he wasn’t around or else he would’ve been the unwilling recipient of several passages of narrative — but overall the book contained a lot of sadness. I had heard that David Sedaris’ books were really funny… And this one wasn’t 100% full of laughs. It was kind of disturbing in parts. I’m planning to read Me Talk Pretty One Day, so I’ll let y’all know what I think of that one.
