If you like the musical, you’ll like the movie. If not, save yourself a few bucks and a few complaints. I LOVED it. (Pssst, Sweetie. I’m still laughing about the time you leaned across the table at the Rococo Theatre after two songs of Jekyll & Hyde and oh so innocently asked, “Is this a musical?”)

I have a friend who adores the stage musical, but walked out of the movie after about half an hour.
I’ve never seen the stage version, and I’m not in any hurry to see the movie…I’ll probably end up renting it, as there are so many other movies out this season that I am dying to see in the theatre. :)

Granted it’s been 10 years since I’ve seen the musical on stage, but I thought the movie and stage version were very similar. Hm.

I think that’s why she disliked it, actually. She felt the movie version was almost a direct translation of the stage version, not adding anything to it in any way, so she just left because she didn’t want her impression of the play marred by the movie.

My dad went to see Chicago by himself while on a business trip a couple years back. He told my mom that about 30 minutes into the movie, he kept wondering why all the characters kept bursting into song and asked himeself, “Is this a musical?” Especially funny is the fact that my dad has expressed a strong distaste for musicals and would have NEVER gone to the movie had he known. But he ended up really liking it! When Dave and I heard this story, we were aghast that he didn’t know Chicago was a musical and even more aghast that his head had been in the sand with all the hubbub back then in the press about the movie!
