what kind of music do you like?
andrew Jun 19, 2003 7:11 PM
bethany, what’s with the 16 day hiatus on your blog?
rebecca Jun 19, 2003 10:26 PM
i pretty much like all kinds of music… rock, rap, jazz, folk, country, classical, etc. i love soundtracks — need to get chicago and into the woods soon.
bethany Jun 20, 2003 12:55 AM
andrew, i don’t know. i just haven’t felt like writing anything….i’m sure i will eventually. summer kind of has that effect on me, though. probably because there’s no homework to put off by blogging.
rebecca….ok, let’s see. that doesn’t leave me with many guidelines, so i’ll just throw out some stuff and it’ll be pretty hit and miss (or miss and miss).
aimee mann – magnolia soundtrack, definitely. “lost in space” album is also good, but magnolia is the best.
bjork – do you like bjork? i think she’s kind of an acquired taste. anyway, i don’t have any albums, but i have about 15 of her songs on my computer that i listen to lots and lots. especially a few from homergenic
chicago soundtrack – yep.
coldplay – i don’t know if you like them/listen to them much. both albums are good – parachutes and rush of blood to the head.
counting crows – obviously
the flaming lips – not sure if this would be your cup of tea, but the soft bulletin is a great album. as is yoshimi battles the pink robots.
jonatha brooke – live is a great, great album. i totally love it. perhaps a bit depressing? but gorgeous.
julie miller – broken things. bluegrassy/alt country/folk/rock feel to it.
lauryn hill – the miseducation of l.h. this is such a good album….it grows on you over time, too
matt banta – precious accident. if you can get your hands on it…he’s from omaha, and really good.
over the rhine – good dog bad dog and films for radio. both fabulous albums, the former a little more mellow.
patty griffin – living with ghosts and 1000 kisses are both MUST have albums
the white stripes – white blood cells. good clean rock’n’roll fun in an offbeat fashion.
wilco – yankee hotel foxtrot
amelie soundtrack
that should about cover it for now…and i would be willing to loan any of the above to you. :)
rebecca Jun 20, 2003 10:02 AM
b, i will take you up on that offer. the only album i own is miseducation of lauryn hill, which i dearly love. sooo… perhaps you could loan me a few of these albums and let me test-drive ’em, so to speak. thanks!

Going outside of my normal musical tastes, I give super high-marks for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

I have found the angst of Nirvana to be quite soothing lately. Pretty ironic, but I think his angst makes me feel better. :)
Lou had an album the other day– Jack Johnson, I think was the guys name… or was is John Jackson… one of the two. Very cool summertime bluesy music.
Agreed with B on the Coldplay. Just got Parachutes in the mail. You can borrow it if you give it back. :)
I have also been listening to Renae’s Alanis Morisette unplugged album from a year or two ago. Pretty darn good album. She’s not as scary when she’ live and unplugged.
An oldie but a good is U2’s Rattle & Hum…
I’ll write more if I think of anything…
bethany Jun 20, 2003 4:33 PM
it’s jack johnson.
andrew Jun 21, 2003 12:26 AM
boo. boo. boo. enter the controversy. mercy is for the weak.
i plead with you to nix the coldplay. listening to coldplay is much akin to listening to some epic wagner over the phone instead of going to the opera house. it’s a simple equation: one part ‘radiohead/oasis/blur envy’ mixed with one part of trashed u2 essence equals coldplay. second, i plead with you to nix the jack johnson. you heard him the first time around…his name was the unoriginal dave matthew’s. if you disagree with that then just follow this next equation: add one part dave matthew’s playing solo, mix it with the worst parts of john mayer upbeatness and you’ve created the most uninteresting music known to man.
let’s hear the torrent
bethany Jun 21, 2003 10:03 AM
i have no love for jack johnson (then again i don’t like dmb or john mayers).
but i do like coldplay. i don’t care if they aren’t cool or original – i like ’em.
sarah Jun 21, 2003 11:14 AM
hear, hear for coldplay…i like them too.
i also just wanted to agree with the high praises to Lauryn Hill; The Miseducation of l.h. is an excellent cd and has held the top space in my cd player for weeks.
rebecca Jun 21, 2003 5:30 PM
i like some of dave matthews band’ stuff; when they’ve got the horns, rhythm sections going they’re awesome. my all time favorite song is theirs is two-step… unfortunately i can’t find that cd.
as to coldplay, i need to hear their whole album. i’m sure i won’t be as tough as andrew, but i’m a little leary just because i tend to not enjoy more mellow music. but i’m willing to give it a try.
you bringin’ the goods tomorrow, b?
and sarah, have a WONDERFUL week at horn creek. i’m getting all nostalgic just thinking of it. : )
lindsay Jun 21, 2003 7:05 PM
how dare you insult coldplay, andrew! shame, shame.
other picks, briefly, (since i should be packing for camp right now):
white stripes: elephant
mae: destination beautiful (i just got it)
nickel creek: this side
COLDPLAY
u2: joshua tree
the get up kids: i like em, don’t know why.
and i’ll second bet’s over the rhine. good stuff.
rebecca Jun 21, 2003 9:46 PM
thanks, lindsay. how was city on a hill? if anyone can stand two weeks of fun & learning back to back, it’s you! have a great time at horn creek!!!! oh and… adam was telling the truth about driving with no stops. (cringe) better not drink too much! ; )
bethany Jun 21, 2003 11:36 PM
rebecca, i have kind of a weird schedule tomorrow. i may or may not see you at church – if not, i’ll just rendezvous with you at some point this week to do the great music hand off.
charity Jun 22, 2003 8:30 PM
Drew – dude, what is up with the slamming of all of the music I suggested?
